Portable businesses are best. I think writing and online marketing of one sort or another are the most viable portable businesses. This includes consulting. Easiest for companies that are tech oriented, or working for yourself.

Great point on bringing different sources of information to one place, that is what I try to do with my blog by posting video, lyrics and my opinion on every post. The forum idea didn't even cross my mind, but you are right, you need a big group of readers first.

I think blogs are truly meant for discussion. The point is to start a good discussion going on a topic started by the blogger. If the blogger has posted a great post then people will definitely start stating their opinions in the comment field. --Very true about having content that stands out as well. No one will visit a blog that has the same type of content as another blog that is more established. Bloggers should make their content unique to their blog, even if they are restating some sort of news. I always stress this to my readers.
